Veterinarians who wish to practice veterinary medicine in Prince Edward Island must be members in good standing with the PEIVMA and licensed to practice by the PEIVMA.
All new applications for registration and licence are completed online. Apply for Membership and License.
Incomplete application packages, including insufficient fees, will mean delay in processing of applications.
VETERINARY TECHNICIANS/TECHNOLOGISTS will register with the PEIVMA starting in 2023. Choose the [NEW MEMBER APPLICATION] tab, select create an account, and choose RVT registration.
A Membership Application must include:
- The completed online membership application form, including declarations.
- Proof of graduation from a university accredited by the CVMA or recognized by the PEIVMA at the time of your graduation.
- Letters of reference (Letter of Standing/Licence Verification) from all licensing jurisdictions where you are or were previously licensed. To be sent directly to the PEIVMA.
- Government-issue photo identification (driver’s license, passport photo page).
- Proof of Canadian citizenship, or possession of a Canada work or study permit.
- The required fees (payable online or by cheque).
- Criminal record check
- Must be within 3 months of the date of the application
- Can be obtained from federal, provincial/state or regional police in your area
*Full-year registration and license runs from January 1 – December 31 annually. Applications submitted after May 1 are pro-rated.
*Annual renewal of registration and license is due by December 31. Members renew registration online.
The PEIVMA issues five categories of License: General, Limited, Academic, Educational, and Short-term
Application for General License
An applicant for a general or limited license MUST provide:
- A completed online application form and the required fees (plus 15% HST).
- A certificate of qualification from the CVMA National Examining Board.
(exemptions exist for graduates of a CVMA-accredited Canadian veterinary college prior to 1986). - Proof of completion of the PEIVMA antimicrobial stewardship course.
- Proof of applicable continuing education requirements.
Application for Academic License
An applicant for an academic license MUST provide:
- A completed online application form. Fees paid by the University of Prince Edward Island.
- Proof of academic appointment to the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI.
- Proof of applicable continuing education requirements.
- Proof of completion of the antimicrobial stewardship course.
Application for Educational License
An applicant for an educational license MUST provide:
- A completed online application form. Fees will be paid by the University of Prince Edward Island
- Proof of acceptance in an internship or residency program at the Atlantic Veterinary College under the direction and supervision of a licensed veterinarian of the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI.
- Educational licence applicants are exempt from continuing education requirements.
- Educational licence applicants are exempt from requirement for a police background check.
- New graduates must provide a declaration confirming expectation of graduation from the dean’s office if they have not yet graduated.

- Enter all requested personal information. Enter your PEI address if known; otherwise, enter your home address. Update this information once you have settled in PEI.
- Professional details section:
- Enter NAVLE score number (if applicable)
- Choose Atlantic Veterinary College for place of employment
- Choose university of graduation and year.
- Declarations section:
- Enter all jurisdictions where you are or have previously been licensed (if applicable)
- Complete statements 3 through 9.
- Supporting documents section:
- Upload a copy of your university degree when available
- Upload your Certificate of Qualification from the CVMA when available (if applicable)
- Currently licensed veterinarians will upload continuing education certificates for the previous two years (if applicable).
- Currently licensed veterinarians must arrange for letters of standing (licence verification) from all jurisdictions in which they are currently or have ever been licensed to be sent directly to the PEIVMA registrar.
- Upload other relevant documents.
- Under Membership and Payments section, choose [VIEW APPLICATION 2023].
- Under 2023 Application:
- Choose educational licence
- Liability insurance will be paid by Employer
- Confirm accuracy of information, Question 4
- Under Application Notes, enter any information you feel is unique to the consideration of your application.
- Under Application Fees, enter “UPEI/AVC” as payer
- Choose “Other” as payment method.
- To complete your application, choose “SAVE, DO NOT SUBMIT”. The registrar will submit your application on your behalf once all documentation is received.
Application for Short-Term License
An applicant for a short-term license MUST provide:
- A completed online application form and the required fees (plus 15% HST).
- A Certificate of Qualification from the CVMA National Examining Board, or proof of graduation from a veterinary college recognized by the PEIVMA.
- Proof of sponsorship by a veterinarian licensed by the PEIVMA.
- Letter of standing from the applicant’s principal licensing jurisdiction. This must come directly from the Licensing body to PEIVMA.
- The required license fee (plus 15% HST). AVC will remit payment for AVC locums.
- Continuing education reporting and police background checks are NOT required.
- NOTE: Veterinarians previously licensed for short-term licence with PEIVMA should contact the registrar directly at registrar@peivma.ca to have the MemberDB account reactivated.
